Concept Based Curriculum Design and Teacher Instructor
Concept based curriculum is an innovative approach that emphasises understanding big ideas and connecting concepts across disciplines. Making your curriculum a 3D model that doesn’t require textbooks and isn’t focused solely on knowledge & skills.
Shifting Teacher Instruction Strategies
Neil is an expert at unpacking PYP documents with staff and leaders, facilitating deeper understanding, creating ownership and accounting for school context.
As a Concept Based Curriculum Instructor (CBCI) and teacher trainer he is able to mentor educators in how to design concept driven curriculum documents, unit plans and assessment tasks. Having worked with national curriculum from countries including Hong Kong, Singapore, Scotland (Curriculum for Excellence) and England & Wales (Cambridge), he is able to align content with inquiry based practices.
He has vast experience with external accreditation agencies expectations for curriculum documents and knows how to effectively create ‘buy-in’ from stakeholders. Primarily to facilitate best practices and positive instructional change within schools.
The Principles of Concept-Based Curriculum Design
Concept-Based Curriculum Design revolves around several core principles that distinguish it from traditional educational models:
CBCI nurtures a culture of inquiry where students ask questions, think critically, and engage in problem-solving.
Neil also offers bespoke workshops in Creative thinking. This is a unique workshop format with content designed to make your school stand out in this area.
Educating responsible and informed global citizens through action-oriented teaching.
Neil has experience aligning units of study, Programmes of Inquiry and also the PYP Exhibition with sustainable action. Also if required the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
By linking concepts across subjects, students develop a holistic understanding and can apply their knowledge in various contexts.
Neil can work with small team or groups of teachers to implement a transdisciplinary appraoch.
Teacher Instruction in Concept-Based Learning
Effective implementation of CBCD requires teachers to adapt their methods through ongoing professional development. Key strategies include inquiry-based learning, collaborative projects, real-world problem-solving, and formative assessments to gauge and adjust student understanding.
